Indication for Different Clasp Designs One question often asked during our partial training course is "what is the correct clasp design to use?" Usually there is no one correct answer to a question like this. Each technician would most likely have different ideas on how they would create their design. BEGO has taken two of the more popular clasp designs and demonstrated their indications of use below. |

| Ring Clasp – The Ring Clasp can be utilized on last molars if applicable. The benefit of this clasp is the elongation, and especially for older patients, the path of insertion is made easier. Furthermore, having the clasp tip showing "forward", the tip will not pinch the cheek during insertion of the RPD frame. Ring clasps are often very effective on tilted or twisted teeth. The longer arm can also be used to take advantage of a greater undercut for more retention. If you have difficulties in casting this type of clasp, here is an easy tip - connect the tip of the ring clasp to the guide plane. This allows a continuous flow of the alloy. | ![]() The use of the Ring Clasp on this distal molar increases stability, takes advantage of the mesial buccal under cuts, and won't pinch the tissue upon seating the restoration. |

![]() The connection location of an I bar or Roach clasp should always be placed in the interproximal area so that it doesn't interfere with the placement of the denture teeth. Bringing the clasp arm to the surface of the acrylic enables the clasp to "flex" during insertion. |
Roach or I Bar Clasp – The Roach Clasp or I-bar is used to enhance the aesthetics. The clasp is usually hidden by the cheek in most facial movements by the patient, and its design, with a long arm, becomes part of the saddle area. It should be designed so that the arm is flush with the acrylic to allow the clasp to move freely during seating and removal of the case. This position also helps eliminate breakage. Try to design this clasp so that it will come out of the interproximal space of the denture teeth, and not from the cervical of the first replacement tooth! | ||||||
