Avoid short castings on RPD Clasps

Have you ever divested a RPD casting to find a short clasp tip? Repairing this type of short casting with a laser welder is possible, but it could be time consuming and costly. To help ensure a complete casting time and time again, wax up RPD cases containing double Akers, Roach or I-bar clasps as follows:
  • Connect the clasp tips with a thin layer of wax.
  • If designing a ring clasp, connect the tip of the clasp to the minor connector or guide plane so the metal can travel 360°.
  • Keep the extra connections thin and small.
  • Position an auxillary sprue (1.2mm) into the waxed clasp connection — e.g. spruing to the side of the rest seat.
  • After casting, cut off extra connections and grind into shape.
This technique will allow the alloy to flow freely and not produce short castings.
